Ad Hoc Committee of Manufacturers and Consultants Being Formed to Revise AC358

by contributors Moncef Souissi and Gary Seider

March 22, 2011

Many people in the industry are interested and concerned about the ongoing status of the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria AC358 for helical piles.  Since AC358 is based upon the 2006 IBC, and with 2009 IBC having been out for quite a while, AC358 needs to be revised and brought current.  In fact, the 2012 IBC is do out in April, so that makes this issue even more urgent for the industry.

DFI Helical Foundation and Tieback (HFT) committee members Moncef Souissi and Gary Seider are fronting the effort to pull together another ad hoc committee to address the needed AC358 revisions. There are nine people who have volunteered to serve on the ad hoc committee to revise AC358.  The scope of the committee’s task is to suggest changes to ensure AC358 is compliant with IBC 2009 (and maybe IBC 2012), plus suggest changes to make AC358 easier to use and understand.  The ad hoc committee is separate from the DFI, but the HFT committee will monitor its progress.  The ad hoc committee is planning to meet for the first time in April.  The time and location for the first meeting has not yet been determined.  The current ad hoc committee members are:

  • Robert Hoyt
  • Moncef Souissi
  • Darin Willis
  • James Cherry
  • Don Deardorff
  • Jeff Kortan
  • Kyle Olsen
  • Greg Riley
  • Tony Jacobsen

Any DFI member in good standing is welcome to join the committee.  Interested parties should realize there will be consultant fees incurred and there could also be out of pocket expenses associated with the process to cover travel-related and meeting expenses. Contact information is below.
