SSRG Installs (15) Helical Piles to Support Foundation at

Defense Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio

June, 2015

About the Defense Supply Center in Columbus

The Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC), which is located next to Port Columbus Airport and several major railroad lines, has served in every major military engagement since World War I.  During WWII the Center became the largest military supply installation in the world. With more than 10,000 civilian employees, it played a large part in the overall war effort. Some of the warehouses were turned into secured barracks to house prisoners of war. Amidst the wars, conflicts and humanitarian relief efforts, the men and women of the installation worked continuously to establish direct and fast moving supply lines to support our troops in all parts of the world.  Through the changes, mergers, reorganizations and base realignments and closures (BRAC), the installation has remained a strong total weapons systems management facility.

Defense Supply Center Columbus contracted Structural Systems Repair Group (SSRG) to stabilize, repair and replace various sections of walls in building #17 – one of many warehouse structures located on the base.

Using IDEAL GROUP helical piles, SSRG crews stabilized (5) separate areas of walls that failed. A total of (15) 2.78” round shaft helical piles were installed.  All piles were installed to an average depth of 18 to 21 feet to a minimum of 5325 ft. lbs. of torque to achieve an allowable bearing capacity of 27 kips.  All piles were then attached to an exposed grade beam using plate brackets and anchor bolts before specified loads were applied.  The (15) piles were installed in two days.

SSRG was also contracted to remove and replace (3) 20 ft. long by 12 ft. tall CMU walls that had failed. 20’ x 12’ tall.  In addition, SSRG cews repaired approximately 250 sq. ft. of spalled and deteriorated concrete at the beam and column areas.  These repairs were completed in an additional three days.
